Dry Skin Remedies for Dogs

It is said that dogs are man’s best friend. As such, our dogs deserve to be treated well and be protected. Surely, we wouldn't want our best friends to live an uncomfortable and unhappy life. Like us, our pets also experience problems that may cause their discomfort. One problem that our pet dogs may suffer from is dry skin. Yes, dogs have that too. As responsible dog owners, looking for remedy for problems like dry skin is a good way to make our pet dogs feel loved.

There are numerous ways to keep our doggies from suffering the discomfort due to dry skin.

Your dog’s dry skin may be due to its unhealthy diet. It’s best to check what your dog is eating. To prevent dry skin, it is advisable that you prepare a diet that is high in protein and contains Omega 3 and Omega 6. These are helpful in keeping dog skin moist.

You may consider getting your dog some fish oil capsule. Fish oil is effective in helping dogs prevent dry skin. It contains essential acids important in keeping its skin moisturized. Aside from fish oil capsule, you can also add a tablespoon of fish oil in your dog food several times a week. Better yet, you can directly apply the oil to your pet’s skin and comb its fur. This is also effective for relieving your dog’s itching problem.

Dog owners usually bathe their dogs as a necessary part of dog grooming. However, it is found that bathing may be a contributory factor to a dog’s dry skin. Over bathing, that is. Dogs must be bathed as little as possible to prevent essential oils from its fur to diminish. Dog shampoos must also contain oatmeal or vitamin E. Remember that dogs have a different PH level than humans. Thus, it is vital that we use a shampoo especially formulated for them. After bath, pat your dog dry.

It is also important that you wash your dog’s coat to prevent particles that may irritate your pet’s skin. Cleaning your pet’s accessories is as important as keeping your pet clean.

There are also several home remedies that you can try to relieve your dog’s dry skin dilemma.

One is with the use of oatmeal. Simply mix the oatmeal with some water and rub it on the dog's skin and coat. Leave on for ten minutes and rinse off with warm water. Be sure to clean your dog’s coat from oatmeal remnants.

Never forget that there are veterinarians in the world. Vets are the number one authority when it comes to our pet’s problems. So, if home remedies and general instructions are not working for our pets, it’s best that we consult our vets. That way, we can be assured that our pets are in good hands.

Also remember that prevention is ALWAYS better than cure. So, while your dog is not yet suffering from dry skin, be informed about the things that may cause it. And prevent them from getting to your dog. Groom your dog just the right way, feed it with healthy food and always give them tender loving care --- with or without dry skin.
