Why Become a Certified Nursing Assistant?

With the recent troubling economic times, and the uncertain job markets of today, the healthcare industry has been one of the few industries with large numbers of jobs, and more importantly, steady jobs.  The healthcare industry is one of the fastest-growing in the world, and within this industry, the certified nursing assistant roles are among those with the highest demand and largest expected future growth.

A certified nursing assistant career is one of the most rewarding jobs there is in the healthcare industry, and assistants have more direct contact with patients than most others, as well as some of the most versatile job duties.  This role involves helping patients with mobility issues, taking common measurements, and explaining situations to patients and their families, just as a few examples.

Certified nursing assistant training is short, but intensive, and focused on the actual activities that will be found in the job environment.  While the training is relatively short, six months or less on average, it is nonetheless intensive and candidates will need education in anatomy, common treatments, medical terminology, and more.  The federal government mandates that all applicants for a certified nursing assistant license complete at least 75 hours of state-approved coursework, and each state will have its own requirements as well.

Job Outlook

Certified nursing assistant jobs are expected to grow by at least 18% over the next 5 to 6 years, and this translates to more available jobs than even the medical billing service will experience.  Certified nursing assistant salary will vary from one provider and location to the next, but most just starting out can expect around $25,000 a year, and with more experience and training, more pay is attainable.  The pay and ongoing opportunities that these positions provide make them great for students and anyone that is looking to get started in the healthcare industry.
